picked up an argentine black and white tegu yesterday. wasnt planning on it but i love them and wanted to check one out at a lps and this guy just chilled on my shoulder for almost an hour. he is so chill its awesome!
i will get pics up tom hopefully.
does anyone else here have a tegu? if so what do yall feed and any tips or tricks for me?
i have done alot of reaserch but i always love to hear real life experiences

I feed mine ground turkey, hardboiled eggs, chicken gizzards and hearts, beef liver, blue berries, tomatoes, grapes. I'll start feeding rat pups and larger when she puts on more size.

I used an old t-shirt that I just wore the day before and put it inside her hide for her to recognize my scent. She was not afraid and tame around me within a few days. I think part of it is because I got her from Varnyard, which is known for having dog tame tegus though. Can't think of anything else at the moment, but feel free to pm me about anything.

oh and you can find tons of information here, http://www.tegutalk.com/forum/portal.php.

Can't wait for pics :) I've been wanting one of these for awhile. I understand that the females stay smaller so would it be possible to keep one in a standard 75g for life?

B/w arg tegus require a 6ft by 3ft space minimum. Most keepers recommend more though. I plan on building mine a custom 8ft by 3 or 4ft enclosure. You could look into blue tegus which are smaller then b/w. But, Blues would still easily outgrow the 75g though.

thanks citri, mine is about 12 inches from nose to tail and he is amazingly calm. i want to keep him lean and not have those massive jowls you see on some adults so i will be feeding him somethin low fat. prob stay away from the mice and just stick with turkey and eggs. did yours take veggies well? do you have pics of yours??
and kitty, as said they will need a large enclosure but a 75 will suit them for a while if turned on its side. they need alot of floor space. but eventually will need at least 2x6 if taken out everyday for exercise. i only say 2x6 bc i had a friend who had hers in a large tank and it was about 3ft but she let it out alot.

Thanks guys. I guess I won't be getting one :| I can't get a big tank like that so I guess I'll have to try and find a different kind of lizard that is "puppy-like"

the massive jowls you see are traits of a healthy mature male, not a fatty. also, though they can become obese, a healthy tegu looks chubby to the untrained eye. and it is important to provide a varried diet, how do you think you would have developed if your mommy only fed you malt o meal? i feed mine lean hormone free ground turkey(foster farms!!!), 4 different types of cockroaches, peaches(great for a backed up tegu) eggs with the shells and whatever else happens to look good and is healthy.

^ no they can't, a sav can get just as big as a tegu and need just as big of a cage
