My 4’x 2’x 2’ DIY Tegu Cage
IMG_1133.jpg

The exterior is painted with Killz and the interior is painted with Drylock. The bottom is water tight (holds water). There is a 20” x 20” screen opening on the top and a 6” x 20” screen opening on each side. Her cage is currently on the back deck/balcony (upstairs).

A general idea of the décor in the tank

Please excuse her fat belly… she ate not long before these pictures were taken and relieved herself shortly after… She is chubby, but not normally as fat as in these pics…

Her body is a hair over 7” long (nose to back legs)

It takes two hands to measure her fully body at 19.5”, but this gives you the basic idea

She was captive bred/born last spring and I received her when she was 3 weeks old and looked like this

IMG_0629.jpg

She hibernated from Late October until Early April… this was the first time I ever had an animal that hibernated… freaky…

She eats either raw ground Turkey & Egg yolk or “fuzzy” mice (live or frozen)… As adults they eat some fruit & greens but so far she shows little to no interest…

Despite the fact I only hold her a couple of times a week and she eats in her cage… She is incredibly tame. She hasn’t even tried to bite me once and was just darling when she went to the ‘Reptile Days’ at a local college this spring.

She’s growing like a darn weed and is already closing in on 8” (body) & is just over 21” full length only 10 days after the above pics were taken.

Anyone interested in keeping a very friendly large lizard I highly suggest looking into Argentinean Black & White Tegus… Mine came from Bobby at Varnyard Tegus who I would highly recommend dealing with as a breeder/supplier…

Very nice lizard;) The only recomendacion is that you diversify its diet more with ocasional big bugs as well as thouse fruits and veggies wich are really important. You could do a mush with groundup turkey and some fruits and vegies and gradualy increase the veggys content.

Thanks for the feeding tips Coura... blending veggies into ground Turkey is a great idea, I feel silly for not thinking of it...

That's a very nice DIY setup. My only question is how do you heat it?

Conveniently, her desired temps are about the same as my local temps... so it just sits on the back balcony in direct sunlight...

My winter temps get a little too cold for her but she hibernates indoors in the winter...

Is there a lock on that door?

very nice, I believe I have seen you on tegu talk
