So, days after my company went into bankruptcy protection and laid off half their staff, including me, my tank cracked across the back and poured water all over our floor. Thankfully we were home and were able to get the fish out, but it's going to be a couple of months for sure before I can afford to get the tank fixed and build a new stand (We're certain the tank was the cause of the fracture). The fish are in a rubbermaid bin right now, but it's not ideal. I don't like the fact that I can't observe the fish well, making it difficult to make sure they're doing ok, and my folks are not overly happy with the giant rubbermaid bin in their basement. I have a 1 year old, 7.5 - 8 inch female Red Devil, and a 4 inch Cuban. I was wondering if I would be able to keep the female in my 40 gallon (12'' x 36") and the Cuban in my standard size 25 gallon, which I believe is 12" x "30, and for how long? I'm just trying to find a decent solution for my fish until I can afford to repair the tank. I should be getting a severence package of some sort in a month, but there's no guarantee as yet. Thanks in advance for the help.

might be a good time to downsize . . . if there are any of the larger fish that you can either a) trade in at the LFS, or b) give/sell to another fishkeeper, that might be a good idea, and then just keep some smaller fish in the 40G and 25G until things improve

sorry about your situation; hope everything works out for you and yours . . .

i agree with the above poster...i don't know how many members there are in canada, but as for the us, i am sure u might be able to find someone that would take care of ur fish for free....i know if i were closer i would...i love just taking care of ne fish and watching it grow and wouldn't mind helping out a fellow member...sorry i am so far away tho...good luck tho

i think that you would be ok keeping these fish in their suggested tanks for 1-2 months max as a very temporary measure. bad things happen and we must make do with what we have. i would do this but for no lobger than 2 months.

if you cant guarantee that a new tank will be availible in the next 1-2 months then i would seriously consider finding them a new home with your lfs even if it means giving them away for free as their health is your primary responsibility.

have you tried ebay/craigslist for a cheap 4/5ft tank?
cant your folks lend you the money?
maybe an MFK'er can house them temporarily for you, its been done before.

good luck though, hope it all works out for you.

Alot of times cracks on the side glass can be repaired by using marine chaulk and a 3/8" thick strip of glass that is a few inches wider and longer than the crack.

well if i were you, i would give them to someone who can either keep them temporarily for you, or i would just give them to a good home forever. it all depends on just how attached you are to them?? im so sorry about the bad luck for you, i hope things pick up for you!

Well, giving them away is the absolute last resort, I'm very attached to these two, and if the tanks aren't a reasonable temporary option, I'll continue to keep them in the giant rubbermaid bin. I just don't like not being able to check up on them properly, and it is an eyesore, but we can deal. This really would only be for a month or so until I can get the money together, definitely not long term.

Craig's list is full of good deals.
