It's possible someone has brought this up but if not then it should be interesting.
I'm not sure if it would work, but I can't see why it shouldn't, when making DIY live rocks out of "Agrocrete" it would would be possible to making it using limestone gravel (fine gravel 1/16-1/8" or even large ones if you want) and or rock dust (powdered limestone at least thats what its called here).
As limestone is mostly composed of Calcium Carbonate (like marble and shells of course, though has more impurities) and since limestone is unbelieveably cheaper then buying argonite sand (at least here) it would be an economical/ practical substitute for DIY live rocks and aquascaping.
Even though it is an ugly gray, I think that it would eventualy go white as the limestone started to break down a little in the water (or you could treat it with a mild acid for a bit before hand to force it to change)
