Hi All,

My MGXB, Ari Gold is 13 months now and overdue an upgrade so I plan to gather the funds and persuade the missus, ASAP! The only issue Im faced with is that the new 6x2.5x2.5ft must go in the exact place that the 4ft currently is. So taking into account the need to maintain cycled water, 3 days cycling new tank, weight/manpower and fish welfare, this is al I could think of.

1) Remove sufficient amount of the current water to fill the only available container I have that's big enough to briefly hold him, a 2.5x1x1ft container with air stone.
2) Using a large, strong, clear plastic bag, transfer him from the 4ft to the temporary container and continue to empty the tank.
3) Leaving just enough water to swim in (point being I want to retain as much cycled water as possible), move tank and cabinet/sump separately to a suitable location nearby. 3 guys should do it??
4) Transfer him back to the partially full but cycled 4ft and add multiple air stones.
5) Over 12-24 hours, slowly fill the 4ft back up to the overflow so it is able to pump and filter.
6) Having cycled the new 6ft while empty, for 24 hours, remove this water, fill up again and cycle another 12-18 hours.
7) Add his bottom dwelling tank mates and allow them to condition the water for a further 24 hours.
8) Should be just about ready???

Any input and advice would be much appreciated. Especially if I've missed something ridiculously obvious!!

Have attached pics of Ari and the current setup.

Thanks.DSC_4995.jpgDSC_4913.jpgDSC_4902.jpg

Beautiful fish for sure - I hope mine grows up as nice!

You are complicating the move - there's no need to cycle the new tank, unless you're using new filters. Even then, just move the filter media to the new filter. I've done this numerous times. Just get plastic garbage cans, rinse them with a fish safe cleaner (I use API Safe & Easy). Transfer water to cans; you can put gravel and everything in them. Hook filter up on one of the cans to keep it circulating. Shuffle the tanks around, start pumping the water back in and replace the gravel etc. The additional water will be like a water change. Put the fish back in, grab a drink, and giggle at how easy it was. I've moved across the city with my 220 gal. marine set-up the same way.

Thanks for the comments! He's been a bit of a drama queen during his first year, scaring me numerous times, causing me to operate once and generally being naughty but I think the the most vulnerable stage is over. Continuing to give him the complexity of food he enjoys will always be a mission though!!

Much appreciated Keith, cheers. I think I'll use half of your advice but instead of him going into the new tank, he'll go back into the old. Reason being that, obviously, it frees up the space but also I've been told the new will need cycling due to the fresh Silicone. Regarding the filter media, I have a feeling the new sump will be wider than the current one so the mechanical wont fit but bio should be fine. Not sure if we have API Safe & Easy over here but I'll look. Any other options? Home remedies?!! Thanks again.

Well, you could scrub it down with vinegar, rinse, then a salt wash with another rinse. Personally, I don't mind the extra steps especially with an expensive fish. I don't take chances!

Yeah, certainly better to be safe than sorry. Probably just use a bit of apple cider vinegar which seems to be a miracle remedy for all sorts!!
