Ok I got my armatus to eat shrimp!!!:headbang2 Now should i stop feeding him feeders? Can he live off just shrimp and krill?

I would not stop giving him feeders. I would make his main food non-live (like shrimp and introduce a bigger menu). Once a month (or so) I would give him a treat of live food. Also so he keeps his hunting instinct. Plus this gives you more time to quarantine your feeders. Nice work, Its a challenge to break a natural habbit of animals.

Care to share your method of getting him on shrimp. I have had mine for almost one year now and is still eating feeders only. I have starved him for up to three weeks and is would still not take shrimp, krill, or silversides. Congrats man:headbang2

Thanks for the info man. I'll continue to feed him feeders maybe a few times a month gutloaded and quarantined of course.

Well i basically just starved him for about a week. If you decide to starve an armatus i would separate it. During the week he ate my female gold jag, tore up the male pretty bad (still healing) and tore up the african pike (still healing). Didnt have a divider and thats what happened. But anyways all i did was starve it for a week then threw in some dry shrimp into the overflow so that it appears alive and the armatus took it right away first time i tried it and now loves it. It even comes to the top to get the krill and splashes water everywhere. I would suggest either putting it in the overflow or tie like a string to it and wave it around in the water. Good luck with yours and thanks for the compliments. :headbang2

what do you mean by throwing it into the overflow???

Mybad not the overflow. Well i have an aquaclear 110 on the tank and i just throw the krill where the water comes back in from the filter and it goes down fast and appears to be alive so the armatus eats it before it floats back to the top.

I wasnt even trying to get my armatus off feeders but from feeding other fish silversides and market shrimp the armatus have just started taking the non live. They grab it on the way down but seldomly pick it off the tank floor. No starving or anything. i am still giving them feeders as well to bulk them up faster
