So I did a water change in my payara tank last night just like I do every week but this time I notice that my armatus was breathing heavily afterward. The redtail and scomb seem to be unaffected though.I checked on him a few hours later and he seemed to have slowed his inhaling somewhat so I turned off all lights and went to bed. This morning I went down to take a look and he is still inhaling visibly but not as much as hours ago and at least it is still alive,I obviously dont want to lose my prized sabertooth so I welcome any advice.

i would check all the water parameters right away. like ammonia-nitrite-ph-temp and even nitrate. Most of the time shock can occur when doing a water change if there is a temp differential and or a ph swing. Adding some salt to the tank at about 1tbs for every 5 gallons of water will help to decrease any stress and or shock.-----------If the fish has any visable signs of disease or tramua I would treat it with antibiotics in a hospital tank right away. Some people say not to use meds but i have for years with payara and other characins with out any negative results.

The parameters all check out normal, the temp of the incoming water could have been a little too warm.I added salt to the twenty gallons of new water that was poured in as I always do so do you think that I should add more salt or not and if this is case of shock then I'm guessing that hopefully he will calm down and come around. There are no signs of body damage other than old battle scars.

very good advice... ive noticed my armatus likes high ph... but if it gets low, he gets in a bad mood...

im sure some meds work great, but i myself have killed alot of payara w meds. IMO there is no reason to use meds when u can get a 50lb bag of salt for 5 bucks...

We maybe on to some new info here with PH and payara. I to have notice that my TAT's become restless if my Ph gets low. I kept mine in a planted tank for a while. And it had a co2 supply which lowers PH and I noticed that when the ph got low at around 6 they would constantly swipe at each other and not stop moving. But know they are in a nonplanted tank and my tap ph is 7.8 and they get along fine.

hmm...armatus are hardier than tats or scombs,so i dont think its a water problem.
cause im sure the scombs would get it first...
maybe its a parasite problem or disease that the armatus couldve gotten and coincidentally shown symptoms after the water change?
i would just bump up the temp, add salt and do regular water changes.

my armatus will start doing laps around the tank and his fin color will fade if my ph drops...

Well guys I'm happy to inform you all that my armatus seems to have settled down and is breathing normaly now, thanks for the replies.

Glad to hear it
