So I know that Armatus tend to grow fast in there first year, but do they suffer from the same death problems as Scombs? I don't know much about them but really don't want to spend so much money on a fish that will die in a year. Also, what are some good tankmates for Armatus?

Well yes Armatus do grow very fast , so tankmates are a minimum. Use the search and look at some of the set-up's and tankmates that people have with there armatus, at the end of the day I would say ray's or a cat that doesn't grow as fast to be larger and eat your armatus. Basicly trial and error bro;) Oh and about them just dropping dead, payara's are iffy but a good setup and good shipping, parameters , and a good diet and he might see 20+''s:D

armatus IMO are not too hard to keep as long as u have a big enough tank

they need lots of room

I think the growth rate can be a little overated. I notice some are more aggressive and territorial than others. tank mates should be larger and able to take a " fanging" once and awhile but not overly aggressive. I keep mine with payara, rays, aros, redhooks, black bars, dats, RCK etc. I have lost my share of armatus but not to the sudden death associated with scombs but to oher tank mates. They need enough room and tanks mates that are not skittish causing them to jet into the glass causng a lethal head injury. Overall very cool fish and worth the price. Oh yeah the teeth live up to the hype. I was moving some food away from the overflow box and he bit my finger, felt like sticking my finger in a socket, had 6-7 puncture wounds and good amount of bleeding. Defenitely one of the top 5 species to won IMO. Good luck

Good tankmates... hard to say cause armatus are not so easy to get along with, you either see it's tankmates belly up with pair of huge puncture holes through it's body, or your armatus gets torn into peices by bigger fish (especially rays). You'd better get some tough fish of around the same size, try avoiding silver fish (scombs, rhaphs etc.) armatus hate them too.
