Armatus? Scomb?

google image it.

Armatus are more robust looking with a orange adipose fin. Scombs have a large head to body ratio.
The sticky gives the most info.

Here's some a pic of my old scomb for you:

And for reference, my old tat:

So a real Armatus has a red fin and its head is lower than a scombs would be?

I can't really sum it up that simply. To me armatus and scomberoides look completely different, I couldn't confuse them if I tried.

The ones that will get you are telling a tatauaia apart from an armatus. These fish are extremely closely related, the only real difference is minor color differences, tiny morphological differences and the fact that the armatus can get about three feet longer than the tatauaia.

Look at the pic of my tat and Slippery K's armatus. Notice how my tat's adipose fin is a dark red like it's tail, K's armatus has a bright orange adipose fin, which contrasts with the tail. Armies will always have this orange adipose fin, tats never will. Normally, armatus will have a vivid white stripe on the outer edge of the anal and caudal fin as well, but K's fish is young and growing and seems to display this trait in a transient manner.

Okay so, when people say my "red tail" they are referring to Their Tat right? The only thing different between a tat and a Armatus is the bright adipose fin and the color of their tail. And a scomb, doesn't have the red/orange adipose fin and doesn't have the look of the Armatus

Correct. Compare the two fish in my post. One is a scomb and the other is a tat. The tat is almost identical to an armatus except for what you listed and their maximum size (18" for a tat, 3' for an armatus; neither is likely to get to their max size in an aquarium). Scombs have a completely different body shape and fins that are often green or brown near the base and clear at the end. Scombs will have a rounded tail, tats and armies have a trident tail (reference the pics). Tats and armies will be silvery or slightly golden through the body, scombs will be more of a slate grey.

Hope this helps.
