Hey guys, im new to the forum, pretty much just joined to ask this question, but then saw all the tons of great stuff, will for sure keep me coming back... I just received an Armatus from riverwonders ... great looking specimen, i have an 80 gallon tank, they are getting some more in, and i was wondering, how many more would be safe to keep in my tank. The fish are about 4"....

Thanks guys, i tried to search, but its sorta a specific questions...

There are 3 species of payara that look the same to an untrained eye.

They are Hydrolycus scomb, Hydrolycus Tatuaia, and Hydrolycus Armatus

The scomb's rarely get past 12'' and a 125g will be fine for a few of them.

The Tat's suposedly get to 18'' but no one has proof of a specimen over 12'' and a 180-220g would be fine for a shoal of them.

Now the armatus gets to 48'' in the wild but will more than likely top out around 30-36'' in aquaria. And it is said that a 10x4+x3 is the minimum for one. And they do not do well with tankmates of any kind most of the time.

Post a picture and we can ID it to let you know which one you have.

didnt say "in stock" when i visited....

ur deff gonna need bigger then an 80 gallon. he will outgrow that tank in 2 to 3 months...

Thanks for the info, I am sorta new to the hobby... I will post a pic in a few days, gonna borrow digi cam from a friend. I have a 135gallon, im gonna set that up, and get it ready to move the armatus over there.... I guess then i will just stick with 1... maybe get a smaller one for the 80 gallon.... But check back, i will post a pic... As far as it not being one, im pretty sure it is, had a few friends order from riverwonders, much more knowledgeable than i… and they have said nothing but good things about them.

hey man, 135.. will not last more then 3months for an armatus if it has tankmates then i mean your gonna run into some trouble.. go more for a 300+ to keep emm for life.

How big is the one you received? Personally I think a 135 would last a solid year with no tankmates. Hell I just moved mine into a 180 from a 125 after a year and he could have easily stayed in the 125 for a little while longer as he is right around the 12" mark

i guess it depends on the actual fishes growth rate. mine outgrew a 150 in about 7 or 8 months. i had another that grew alot slower....
