What do you think would be good tank mates for an armatus? Right now im planning on stocking him with one or two peacock bass, silver arowana, another armatus... And possibly a Polypterus. What do you guys think about these options?

And also what other suggestions do you have as to the does, the dont's, and the never put those fish in the same tank!!!!!

I plan on keeping wide bar silver dollars with mine. Can't comment much on the behavior of the species you listed though... poly would be cool too. Heck even the aro. Just make sure they're not swallowable-size for your armatus. I saw a vid somewhere with an armatus eating a peacock bass (I believe)...

I saw that video too, and i will definitely make sure they are around the same size as to not have swimming bait in my tank. Im just worried about the poly. Im also going to go for a florida gar. Thats one of my dream tanks a couple years down the road.

Anything you put with them needs to be fast growing. It would also be a very good idea if they started a bit bigger than the army as well.

Also, be cognizant of the fact that many popular aquarium fish are natural prey items of the armatus. Including pbass. That factor could potentially cause problems down the road.

I personally wouldnt do 2 armatus. Themore dominant one usually wil beat up the smaller one. I think the bass and aro will work if you have the proper tank spac for them. On the other hand my armatus loves to sit in current and aros dont do well in fast moving water. Id for sure set ur tank up accordingly. Dead water on top and fast on the bottom. Im interested on how it goes as well. Im breaking my armatus onto pellets before I add tank mates. He keeps killing his dithers during this process.

wow, i thought 2 armatus should work together, but thanks for the heads up. This site saves me a lot of headache when it comes to my fish tanks. Also i heard that they cant be in a tank with aggresive fish like cichlids and oscars. Is this true about aggressive fish?

Most cichlids would grow faster and are more aggressive when small. They'd outcompete the army for food and/or beat him up and possibly kill him. Once the army gets bigger, he will recognize the cichlids as his natural prey items from the wild.

Basically a hit and miss. All depends on personality and whether it is well fed or not. you see, i keep my 11 inch armatus with a bunch of 6 inch bichirs with no problems. other armatus keeper has have no luck with armatus and bichirs no matter what size.

Make sure the tankmates can handle the beatings of the armatus and vice versa. Wolf fish seems to be a worthy tankmate to keep.

but what about the oscar? There is no way he can eat a big oscar, but would they get along?
