anyone using black sand with aro (RTG)? I'm changing my substrate to black sand. My background is dark blue. Are there any down side to using sand with aro? Thanks, DD

Only problems I have had with black sand is that it can keep a lot of stuff trapped inside of it. I like to keep some fish to constantly turn the sand over(geophagus or paretroplus for example).

i have 8 parrot fish and a large pleco to do that for me. I will add my stingray once it's big enough.

I'm more concern with water parameter. I just found out i used the wrong type of sand (core reef sand) in my previous setup. I knew that this type of sand will increase PH but i didn't know it would make such a different with a water to sand ratio. I only use 40lbs for my 500g tank. I had it for about 2month and my PH was at 7.8. The rest is large rocks. I will test the rocks later today to see if that's a contribution my higher PH.

The new sand I've purchase is black Tahitian sand (inert) about 400lbs. i should have done this in the beginning instead of trying to find a cheaper alternative (wasted time and money). I'm trying to get my water parameter to 7.0-7.2. I'm thinking about mixing the two together since i don't want a PH drop either.

I don't think Tahitian moon sand would alter pH level...should just take the reef sand out that'll bring your water back to normal

sands color doesnt really affect an arro as muchas the background and sides do

and as for sand vs. gravel in size, with arrows it doesnt matter

Well it took two water change in two days to get all the rocks and most of the reef sand out. My water looked polluted when i was removing the rocks and sand. My aro didn't like it at all. He was acting like he has and itch off sort. He's back to normal this morning.

Can't wait till my sand arrive. I think it's going to look great.

The black sand looks much nicer but will need more light. I also notice the top my aro getting darker....
