In a Smuckers jar.
How big of a diffrence is a silvers growth rate compared to a blacks growth rate? I've heard that blacks grow way slower compared to silvers. Is that true? If I were to keep a black in a 180 how long will it take it to outgrow the tank? what about the silver?

Depends on the fish, there is a members here that had a black aro reach 30" within 4 years. Then there is mine that only grown from 10-11" to 16-17" in the year I've owned it.

With silvers average growth is about 1-1 1/2 inches a month. I would say that you could keep a black or silver in a 180g up until it's around 26-27", maybe a little longer.

I see, thanks. How long have you had your silvers in the 180? Do you know how old your silvers are?

The silvers were put into the 180g last May, at that time they were about 18 and 22" now they are about 24-26".

One I have raised since 3" I got it in early Feb 2006 so figure just under 2.5 years old. The other I adopted last May at 22" the previous owner had it for a year and a half and got it at 5", so it is nearing 3 years old.

I have a 350g tank 6'x4'x2' that they will be moving into. I am hoping for this to happen within a few months.

Ahh, I see. Is the 350 gonna be enough room to be a tank for life in your opinion? I was thinking about going for a 6x4 or a 7x3 tank when I get my aro. Also from watching your aro move around in the 180 do you think the 6x4 or the 7x3 would suit them better, Ive heard that silvers and blacks are quit flexible so I have no idea which tank the fish would be better off in.

where would you be getting this 6x4 or 7x3 tank from?

You may just have to build one. Eventually in a couple years I hope to have a 8' x 4' x 30" built for them to live in. I do think they will be fine in the 350 for awhile though.

With the two dimensions you mentioned I would go with the 6' x 4' just because it is bigger.

ditto. there are people with quite a few aros in a tank smaller than that with no plans to upgrade and they all get praised for it.

I myself am about to start a 8-9 piece silver aro comm in a tank with the same footprint as a 180 (6x2x3) and I feel they will be fine in there for quite awhile as long as I keep up on the maintenance. When i say quite awhile I mean at least a year maybe even two.

Thanks Bderick67 and señor_pescados_felices for the feedback.

I see you decided to do a aro community huh señor_pescados_felices.:D
Well rethinking everything a silver or a black aro is probally not a aro I will be able to house in the futhure:(. So what about a lei or jar, will these guys out grow a 6x2 or 6x3?
