Hello.
I have wanted an aro since I joined this site. How many of you have kept them in a 24" wide tank, and how have they done?

I was going to wait until I could get a tank thats 30 or 48" wide, but I see alot of you have them in 24" tanks. So I am wanting to hear from people with experience.

1 Do they seem unhappy? I mean I know its not enough room, honestly few of use have "enough" room for them.

2 Do they die sooner?

3 If you would say yes it can be done, do you have any thing I should look out for?

They could get deformed or die earlier if kept in a small tank, i house 2 silver arowana's in a 6x2x2. They seem earlier with the space to swim around. Mine are 60cms and 30cms

Depends on which type of arowana. I keep an 18in jardini in 72X24X25 tank with no problems. Here is a short video of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAIOl8mKwzY&feature=channel

aros do take a bit to grow, enough time for you to fall in love with it and when its ready you'll be dieing to give it the 3 or 4 foot wide tank it needs. I would buy a baby and grow it up, they are so cute when they are tiny. So i dont see any problem starting in a 24 inch wide, i think thats a better home than most provide for arowanas. Then when it grows really big , i doubt you'll hesitate to get the tank you and your fish want.

The problem with grow outs (and I have been guilty of this in the past) is no matter how much you intend to get a bigger tank when the time comes your not always able to get that bigger tank. Whether it be a financial issue with the loss of a job, space for the bigger tank because you moved, or whatever. You don't know what the future will hold. Then your put into a situation that you can no longer adequately care for your fish. Grow outs are only good when you already have the bigger tank and are just waiting for it to grow out.

I keep a 20" silver aro in a 24" deep tank. They start slowing down growing length wise between 18-24" and really bulk up. IMO 6'x2'x2' is bare minimum for these guys.

trust me man.. 24 inches is plenty for Asian arowana and jars
however.. for silvers the 24 inch width would be good only for sometime.
Arowanas can turn of a dime so IMO 24 inches is GOOD!

Ive had my RTG in a 6x2x2 since he was about 17",now he is about 21" and seems happy enough and ive had him about 18months and he can turn on a dime as said earlier, its surprising where they can get too, like ive got my heater in the corner of the tank and he still somehow gets round behind the wire:screwy:.
I do think my tank is the minimum but you could have one for say 3years in my tank as thats roughly how old he is,but i am upgrading in the new year.
If you have a 6x2x2 and intend using it for an aro,if you buy it at the right size it will be ok for a while, even a silver,BUT if you are planning to buy a tank then get a bigger one,the biggest you can possibly fit.

Thank you for all the replies, it seems like they could live in 24 but would be happier in a wider tank. I guess I will just be patient and get the right size tank to start with.

Thanks everyone, hope all had a happy new year.
