so i feed my aro food sticks, bloodworms, beefheart and krill. when i feed him the bloodworms and beefheart he makes a huge mess. it seems like more of the food is coming out of his gills then down his belly. is this normal? should i be feeding him something else?

My aros seem to have a problem with the beefheart. My 24" jardini threw up her beefheart meal from the night before and it nearly killed her in her tank. I would suggest cutting the beefheart from the feeding regime. She also does seem to throw a lot of bloodworms out of her gills but the catfish eat all that hits the bottom of the tank.

I too think it might be the beefheart which is causing the problem.

A few months ago, my (then) 14" Silver Aro also threw up goat heart he had the night before.. He has never thrown up (i.e. not spit out but vomit out) food before or since that one time I tried feeding him goat heart.

I did a little more reading and apparently, you need to make a "Beef Heart Mix" (i.e. heart ground down to a paste in a blender with other ingredients).. The "recipe" I found was for Discuss, so I didn't actually try it.

I wonder, what do the experts here think? (Is heart (beef, lamb, chicken etc) to be fed in the form of BHM or just slices of the heart directly?)

Thank you,
Sid

skip the beefheart

If your going to get your aro eating those messy foods Id buy a Feng Fei to clean up the aros uneaten food. Aro and a feng Fei (or red tail flag fish) are a great pair together.

Ok ill stop feeding beef heart. What other non messy food should I feed him and where can I get it? I just started feeding him frozen silversides tonight.

I was gonna suggest silversides. :) You can also feed shrimp (take the exoskeleton off), tilapia filet, octopus, etc. Just cut it into pieces small enough so that they don't get smooshed, and most flies out the gills. If the pieces are small enough, they will be swallowed in one gulp with minimal stuff coming from the gills.
