I don't know much about aros, but they are often recommended as tankmates for stingrays. Which types are ok to be housed with rays and what is the minimum tank requirements.

Silvers and blacks do great with rays, as well as Asians (Asians are illegal here in the states though). 300g is the bare minimum for a silver or black IMO (the wider the better), but that can and will be disputed.

Things to consider, regarding silver and black arowanas. They live quite along time 20years. They get quite large (36" and bigger) and are constantly swimming, so a huge tank is a must. They are jumpers, and they are very strong, so the tank lid must be very secure and weighted.

I would recommend getting one, as long as you can provide a tank big enough to house it.

No way to make a lid? even something to keep them from jumping out (like a fine net) will work

Yeah I just talked to my lfs and they have a material they use to make lids up there. So, are blacks smaller than silvers or do they have a smaller growth rate? Is a 180 ok for about 3 years? We are planningon building a new house in 3 or 4 years and are working an indoor pond into our living room.

Blacks generally grow more slowly and have a more slender body. IMO a 180 will be fine for 3 years for a Black Arowana.

would 180 tank be a a starting point for any future arowana owner? how about a 240 tank? how long do you think i could house it for in there?

There is a guy on here that has a 12 year old silver aro in a 180g. I would say though once the aro reaches the 24" range you would want to start looking to rehome in a larger tank. I'm going for a tank that is 96" x 36" x 24", for my 3 aros. If I ever feel that they need more space then maybe an indoor pond.

It is hard to give a definite answer, but silver aros can reach 24" in 2-2.5 years. The 240 would definitely be a better choice, if the room and finances are available:)
