Hey everyone
I am planning to shift my 12inch silver to my bigger tank (10'x2')...now presently i am having a mixed substrate in that tank..now i am a little confused i know that there are 2 types of tank setups in general bare bottom and a planted tank and each has its own advantages and disadvantages..what i am confused about is that when i will feed my aro meaty foods (fish meat/shrimps) they will obviously gonna sink to the bottom so when my aro will go to the bottom to pick up the food are there any chances of him getting hurt because of the gravel in there ? or should i go for a bare bottom tank like i am having one (smaller tank) ?..secondly i am having about 50 plus clown loaches in that tank(bigger tank) ranging between 1.5 to 2.5 inchs in size can they live with my silver for life ? or should i take them out too ? Thanks in advance

All depends on how ur aro feeds. If he snatches food aggressively, then he might be hurting his lip on the gravel but nothing too serious. If he does it gently, then there shouldn't be too much issue.

Another thing is he might even snatch it before it hits the bottom, so try feeding piece by piece. But having food sit on the bottom is bad anyway. It'll contribute to drop eye

Food sitting on the bottom does not contribute to DE, as DE is not caused by the arowana looking down. There are dangers with feeding of the bottom though, the aro can possibly swallow pieces of subrate taken along with the food. The arowana can also scratch it's eyes on the substrate when taking food. Best to feed sinking foods by hand or a veggie clip to keep from ending up on the bottom. With frozen shrimp you can also stuff with a floating pellets or food sticks to make the shrimp float.

Don't feed the aro by dumping in loads of food

Take your time a drop 1 bit in at a time when the aro is facing the direction you are dropping the food in

I am a firm believer that aros feeding from the bottom is a part reason for drop eye
A aro in the wild would never feed from the bottom so would never look down for food

A aro in the wild would be skimming the surface with its barbels waiting for insects to drop in the water or looking up it branches for insects or small mammals the design of the aro shows you that

Once you start having a bare bottom tank which reflects light back and the aro taking food from the bottom the aro will start looking down for food not up

I know people are going to say the bare glass doesn't reflect BUT why does my aro sometimes snacp at food that's behind him in the front glass if it doesn't reflect

Just drop in one bit of food at a time untill the aro let's one bit past this will tell you he's full
