hi people,I have had no exp with aros and I wish to know if any strains can live succesfully in a community tank with fairly robust species like jags,rd,rt,gt,cubans etc and if so which would be best.Tank size would be min 180 to 240.Being 6x2x2 or 8x2x2 footprint. And please dont suggest oscars as i have seen to many of these terrorised by 4" cons plus they cant compete with the others i metioned in my experieces.I have given up on o's completly.I'm pretty sure I can get asians here in australia but there not cheap.

as far as i know silvers and blacks can live w/ most fish that are big enough to not get eaten. im sure each fish and setup will be different. jardinis on the other hand like to be the boss. in some cases people get lucky and get jars to live in communities but rarely.

if you have the money for an asian and they are legal then thats what you should do. imo! just an awsome and beautiful fish!

Larger aros can do ok, but those species you listed are pretty agro, and can nip at the aros. I think you have some hoop jumping in order to get an asian in Australia.

I have a combination in my tank that I hope doesn't change, but so far it's very zen!
16" Silver Aro
4" Bristlenose Pleco that won't grow
1 1/2" Algae Eater
2" Angelfish
2" Blue Guarami (however it's spelled)
3" Clown Loach
2 1/2" Buffalo Head

The Aro just loves to hate the buffalo head because he just must look tasty
but so far, everbody is happy. I know someday I'll wakeup to 1 Aro. I hope it doesn't happen, but I'm defying the laws of Aro keeping!

aros can be housed with anything. anything that wont skin it alive, or fit in its mouth. i have my 2fter with lil 2" buttis and there still alive. and he never messed with a 2" archer either. but ate bichirs that were to small, ate my barramundi that was about 2", but that was about it.

If I had bought smaller versions of what I have or feeders, my Aro would chow them down. It's like he knows who he supposed to eat. I swear when I put the blue G. in yesterday he looked at it and looked at me and I said "Don't EVEN think about it!" I think he heard me quite clearly because he swam away and has shown no interest. Poor little dude, he's so scared right now! He started to pal around with my angelfish so he should settle in.

The Aro will divebomb that Buffalo Head, hit the bottom of the tank with his mouth open and snapping and the front 1/3 of his body is sideways parallel and flat with the bottom. He always misses, which just makes him madder but the Buffalo Head Bullies and Buffalo's everyone except the Aro and the Aro won't tolerate it.

It's funny now because the other fish know the Buffalo will charge and not follow up, they called his bluff. They named him A Buffalo because he's full of Buffalo!

I saw an add for a green asian aro recently in sydney for $1000au ,It was 15 cm.I have been told you can keep them here as long as they are from breeding stock and not wild caught.I was also told for asians you need a permit in Australia but this is not meant to be to hard to obtain. Can anyone correct me as I dont want to end up with a fine.
