When I was cleaning the tank today, I found four scales on the bottom of the tank. My aro lives in a 75 alone with his food. He has a slight wound on his back but I can't tell if the scales are missing. It really looks like there are scales there and the wound is contained to the area of only two scales. That does not explain the other two scales. The wound was not there yesterday and it is probably from trying to jump.

Probably trying to jump into a bigger tank.

Look at your Aro with different angles of light...you'll find the spots that the scales come from.

Thanks, I found a spot where the third scale came from. Still it looks like there is a scale there. Do aro's have multiple scale layers like a polypterus? Btw, I don't remember if I stated yesterday that I added salt after the water change and also added Stress Coat. Anything else I should do or watch out for?

Also, the wound area does not look all that bad today.

Arows will tend to shed a scale or so, I have found a total of 5 scales from both my arowanas and they always have a scale there to replace it.

Once the top scale fall off, there's this soft scale underneath there. It will start to harden up to replace the lost one.

It's all good, it happens, I find them sometimes when I don't notice one missing, sometimes they fall off immediately and sometimes if injured I've seen them blacken then fall post injury. If you want to save any, weight them down while drying or they will curl up. (The scale, not the Aro!!)

 Actually I thought of saving them since they are so big. They dried up and curled except for one. I'll stick it in a book for a while.

It would be faster to weight down the aro and dry them all at the same time. Hmmm, makes me think of the goose that laid the golden eggs.
