Hello, I have a 18" arowana that is in a 125 gallon (yes i know its too small please do not call fish protection services). He will be in a 240 gallon (by himself) within the next week or two. Anyways, in the past he has jumped and smacked the top of the tank a few times resulting in a lost scale or two. I spooked him last night by adding a new background to the tank. He jumped and knocked a few scales loose and screwed up his barbell. Both barbells are in tact, but not useable for senseing right now. He probably would not have jumped if i had him in the 240 or if i just left the origional background on the tank. Well regardless, he jumped. His barbels are screwed up. I feel bad for my buddy.. I hope that they will heal back . Have you ever encountered this? HOw long will it take? couple months? Do they grow back to original size and function? Should i treat the water with anything to help him out? I have added stress coat. Thanks

Depending on your water quality, they will surely grow back (the barbels and scales).. Mine had the same problem as yours but the scales aren't fully healed yet.. almost there
The barbels were initially rotted away but has fully grown back.. I wouldn't say they grew back to original size and length but I can tell the barbels fully healed..
Give him a couple of weeks.. :)
Oh, and keep up the weekly water changes too.. Keep the water pristine at all times..

thank you for your help. I assumed they would grow back but just wanted to make sure. He is a soldier. I do my best to keep the water crystal clear with an aquaclear 110, water changes, and a aquatop 500uv.

Barbell will grow back definitely. try letting the aro live in a dark environment it should speed up the process of healing and regrowth.

my large silver has grown his barbels back 3 times over the years. aros will jump, we just gotta accept that. keep the water clean and he'll heal up.
