hey, i need advice. I was wiping down the side of the aquarium and it startled my arowana. He went flying faster than i have ever seen him move and slammed into the side of some drift wood. he has a good scrape near his mouth and i was going to just put some salt in the tank and then ignore it because it didn't look too bad. But then i noticed he has a splinter of driftwood sticking out of his chin.

Should i do anything other then add salt to the tank? I cant imagine trying to pull it out.

It just happened so i don't know if he is acting normal or not.

help

it looks like the splinter has fallen out on its own

I would just chance the splinter falling out over the next couple days. Trying to catch and remove would probably just cause more stress and/or damage

Good luck and post pics if you can.

i dont have the best camera in the world so taking a picture just isnt going to work....maybe if he would sit still long enough. the splinter fell out already so my main concern is no more...i still cant figure out how he ran into a solid object like that at top speed. I could understand the clear side of the aquarium, but not a solid piece of wood....it was like watching a car smash into a wall. pretty crazy.

if my 11 inch oscar can make water splash up and drip from the ceiling in my apartment, i'm sure your arowana can get a chin sliver, lol. fish do some crazy silly things sometimes......

i would keep an eye on the wound, and up your water changes to keep the tank as clean as possible. other than keeping an eye out for infection, the main thing to do is keep the environment as clean as you can to aid in the aro healing up. i personally wouldn't use salt, but that's just me. IMO salt can aggravate a wound.

Yep, this is why these fish need such large tanks, room to move when spooked. Kaya has a good suggestion about removing any possible hazzards, this will definetly not be the last time it gets spooked.
