Hello everyone, I havea silver arowana that I had just gotten a month ago that is about 7-8 inches in length. It will eat pellets, crickets, guppies(as a treat) etc. Whenever anyone gets near the tank, it will run like a crazy fish. It is even very startled by the other fish in the tank such as the 6-7 inch oscars that I have in there. Is this just a stage in life or will I have to live with an arowana who is a complete chicken? Im not trying to be mean but that is the only way to describe it. Whenever I put food in the tank, it will run away from my finger and wait until I leave to eat. At what point will it be able to trust me and eat stuff off of my hand? Thank you guys for reading my first post on monsterfishkeepers.com and I hope you guys will be able to provide me with information on the silver arowana with the information provided.

I feed mine anything, he even eats his veggies ^_^

boodworms
silversides
hotdogs
shrimp
crab meat
other fish
tebifex
pellets

Basically anything that fits in his mouth and was alive at one point

There could be several reasons why your aro is skittish. Let's start with, what is the tank size and what are the number, type and size of tankmates?

Floating plants will make it feel more secure.

Mine eats anything that fits in its mouth, mind you my aro is a jar, he was really really skittish in my tank to for like 4 months he would always hide, but then i got him a friend and he had a go at him but now there mates and he comes out all the time and never hides cause he has someone to hang with.

isn't it bad to feed them processed foods such as hotdogs?

He is in a 60 gallon tank for now by himself until he gets bigger, I will upgrade him to my 125 gallon tank. I tried putting him in with my 6-7 inch oscars but they were attacking him so i removed them.

Man that it awesome. I would like to get him a mate but Im just afraid that there will be conflict and I would either have to put them into separate tanks or see one dead
