When I bought my arowana from the fish store, a guy working there told me that arowanas like to jump out of the tanks. He recommended putting weights on the hood. What do you guys use to weigh down your lids? And, about how big do the silver arowanas get before they stat jumping?

I put my old college books on my lids. If the aro is alive it will jump! Be sure to cover up any and all cracks and holes in your tank, no matter how small.

Another method is to use those transparent COKE plastic bottles (1.25L or 2L type), fill them up with water..and lay a few on the lid covers...this should solve the problem..

another way is to use thicker glass covers for your tanks....i use those and all my giants are safe till now...

Yeah, I took care of the small opening the first day I brought him home. I cut a piece of 2x4 to fit over a hole in the lid (used to have dual power filter set-up). After I cut I cut it to length I notched it with a jigsaw to make room for the power button and cord so it sits flush. Then I painted it black, so it kinda matches and doesn't stand out so bad.

Im using 1/2" glass for my lids and so far so good....my aro does like to jump though.

I weight tank lids with bricks sewn into terri cloth covers, When I was keeping american eels I used a bar clamp to hold down the lid because those silly buggers brace againt the bottom and push.

One thing important to note. We all know that arowanas are great jumpers...and in the tank environment, they do jump once a while due to fright or sometimes, just to grab food for feeding...

But from my experience, arowanas that has already gotten used to the tank its in..normally DO NOT jump that much..or never at all..unless frightened out of a sudden.

Once of the more graved reason aros try to jump is due to ill water condition...so if you have an aro that tries to jump for no reason on constant basis, please check ur water readings immediate and follow up with water changes if possible...the jump is a tell tale sign that the water is not good and it is suffering..perhaps from ammonia burn.
