Hey! I'm new to arowanas and i just got him today. I have him in a 10 gallon tank as of right now, until the 55 gallon is cycled. Hes very small, Maybe about 7 cm. I've had him in there for 8 hours, is it normal for him to kinda dwell at the bottom of the tank by the gravel? Or is it something I should be worrying about? Is it because hes new to the environment?

regularly thats not normal, they aren't strictly a top water fish but will often spend alot of time near or at the top of the tank. In this case i think he is still adjusting.

whats your water parameters in the 10 gallon?
Also, no arowana can be "happy" in a 55 gallon for long.

hope you get a bigger tank for him.
im assuming its a silver aro?
just check water parameters.
it will be normal for a new aro.

he's probably afraid and adjusting... but 7cm is a bit too small, have you been keeping them before? they're very fragile at that stage

The 55 will also be a temporary tank, as my house has just finished remodeling and I still have junk all over the place. After the place is cleaned out, I will purchase a 200 gallon. Can you guys tell me the parameters you guys have for your tank?

parameters?

No ammonia, no nitrite EVER

Nitrates vary from 5-30 but usually about 10

pH pretty alkaline, but it doesn't matter

With an aro that small you want a well established tank to make sur eyou dont get any mini cycles.

Doesn't sound liek its doin to well.

If you are planning a 200 gallon for life, I don't think that would work. I have yet to see a 200 gallon that can really comfortably house an aro. I think you need a 30" wide and at least an 8 foot long.

thank you everyone! i did a 20% water change and fixed my water parameters and now hes doing fine. hes swimming back and forth, and looks great!
