PLEASE NOTE I ORIGINALLY POSTED THIS IN THE "AROWANA" SECTION BUT GOT NO FEEDBACK. I WANTED TO SEE WHAT MY FELLOW RAY OWNERS HAD TO SAY.

I have a 17" silver arowana and a 9" male motoro and I have noticed some aggression from the arowana in the past week or so. The ray will be swimming up the tank walls or just swimming along the bottom and my arowana will nip at him. Sometimes the ray freaks and flys to the other side of the tank sometimes he doesn't even flinch.

I am very confused I have never heard of an arowana showing aggression towards a ray before and found nothing in my search. I was wondering if you guys would give me some advice on this. I started feeding my arowana more but have not noticed a difference in aggression there is no consistency either with the "attacks" on my ray.

i had a silver that did the same but since id waited so long to the the ray i got rid of the aro as a precaution .

tbh i would think that they would get used to each other but the amount of damage that could be done wasnt worth risking. my ray was about four inches though and they heal quick so you should stand a good chance of things calming down before you need to intervene. just check out breeding scars etc .

there has been talk of aros being aggressive to rays and vice versa. it could be that they are getting cramped on space and lashing out. could also just be the fish adjusting its temperament to go with its large size.

I have considered selling the arowana but I see no damage to the ray and he doesn't seem very stressed. Still eating like a pig and still active all over the tank even swimming midline across the tank.

I am feeding my large arowana twice a day on krill/shrimp and pellets should I up this amount? The arowana even steals the rays massivore sitting on the bottom of the tank lol

Before moving my rays/aro out of my 125g grow out, the aro did seem very terrirorial of "his" space. Never did any damage, but did nip at my rays. Since moving them into my big tank, I notice him dive down at them or hover just above them even "nip" at em. Never does any damage. I think he is looking for a response, maybe showing a little dominance. Rays pretty much ignore him. If your aro is much larger than the ray and seems to be getting agressive, I would definitely move him before its too late.

Yah, a 17" silver is going to claim a large amount of space as his

What size tank are they in, any upgrade plans in the near future? Silvers really do get huge and fast, I wouldn't even attempt keeping one in my 300 that is the reason I am waiting on an afro for like 1.5 years now

I must be the exception my 3 black aro's dont bother my pups infact it seems they are very carefull around the rays. never once even seen a nip.
