Arowana with GATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept my GATF with South American arowanas for almost a year. The only time there's ever been an issue is when the aro went after the GATF first.

A large GATF like the one in the video is certainly capable of feeding on a spaghetti noodle-like fish that is a silver aro half its size. However, with the OP trying to mix a smaller GATF with a larger, faster growing silver aro, I don't see a problem. It will be a long, long time before the GATF gets bigger than the aro.

In my opinion, as long as you start with a larger aro, this is a perfectly safe and very good combination.

Heck, my GATF tries to school with my aro.

Same experience with my gatf. Then again with my vatf. Only if the aro tries to pick on it did I have issues. Silvers can be grumpy at that size so I'd watch it close. Might be better off if the aro was 16" or larger. They calm down a bit at that size.

Thanks, Scott.

And for reference for the OP: when I first got my GATF on April 17 2012, my sister picked up a silver aro. The GATF was 2.5" and the aro was 3". The fish lived together for almost a year. When my sister and her husband moved to California in January and the fish were separated, the GATF was 10 inches and the aro was 15".

Thanks guys, got exactly the info I was looking for. I think I'm gunna try to move the GATF soon.

Just be ready to remove in a hurry! When my combo went south it was a silver blur and aro scales everywhere. I watched it happen aro took a shot at the atf and the atf had enough. The aro got a bad beating in a matter of seconds. Should be good though, you know your aro, if it is an a-hole it is destined to fail before it even was.

I have 5 large aros and there all dicks lol...they shredded a 20" lung fish and will not tolerate any tankmates. Def. More tame when theres only one but i wouldnt risk the gatf for an aro. I think of it in cost of fish. $150 fish vs. $50 fish. More expensive fish wins every time in my eyes when things go south. Just keep an eye out...gotta remember they deciede who lives and dies not you haha..ive had combo tanks fail after years of happiness so its always a gamble
