I am having a hard time trying to make my water more alkaline....My ph is 6.0 and I wanna get it to about 7.2 or so...what ph do you guys have? I have been using aquaclear ph up and it's hard to keep the ph levels stable...I wanna transfer a couple of my baby arowana to the larger 180 gallon tank (one black one as well).....problem is good ways to make sure the ph will be balanced......I am thinking of putting ph up in the water used when doing water changes (five gallon buckets at a time). Are there clever ways to do this and which would be the most practical to use for regular water changes? Anyhow...please, I need input...any help...I have gone into unknown territory, I'm scared! hold me.... Serious, Some Help People.;) :D

I think arowana actually prefer slightly acidic conditions, ie river n tannins in the water. pH 6 is actually okay, i wouldnt justify changing it. Fluctuations in pH is actually worse. The thing you have to watch is KH and ensure that your water has buffering capacity.

Your aros will do fine in a lower pH. Before adjusting pH you need to know what the kh (carboate hardness) of your water is. If your kh is to low this can lead to unstable conditions and large ph swings.

I think this is the problem...how does this occur? thanks for the input everyone...I acually just moved into a new place and the water wasnt running ...We got the plumbing freash.....the ph then was very low....now that I check it it is fine....either it was from the pipes clearing out all that crud....or it is what Bderick67 said...I just did a 40% water change....will check the ph when I get home from work

don' t use any chemical. Do a 100% water change and let the tank cycle for 2-3 weeks and check it again. Basically, you are starting over. What is the ph from the tap water?

Always a good idea...thanks

Aros live in low ph. Your water, as Brian is saying, must lack in buffering capacity. Put in a mesh bag of crushed coral. Do not use chemistry.
