I just got a shipment of fish in today and for the most part everything is fine. I got 4 'Cichlasoma' beani, 4 'Cichlasoma grammodes', 4 Amphiliophus trimaculatus, and a Vieja melanurus. All fish are between 1 and 2 inches.

Fish were bagged separately, all were healthy and in good spirits except the grammodes, one was already dead and the rest were on their sides and breathing heavily with their mouths open wide.

I mixed some tank water in with them, acclimated them and released them into the tank. They did not improve and the other fish were doing very well and began to peck at them so I transfered them to a floating tupaware container with a bunch of holes in it. They have been breating heavily on their sides for an hour or so now.

Any idea what direction I should take here? All other fish are doing excellent.

When i said they were bagged separately I meant that each species was bagged separately so the grammodes were in a bad with a dead fish for some amount of time.

I was thinking that maybe ammonia built up in the bag and burned their gills, if so any ideas?

Just saw this thread. You did the right thing. Add aeration. Don't add any "stress coat" type products, just keep the water pristine and aerated. Whether or not they recover depends mostly on how bad the damage was before you opened the bag. By correcting their environment you've done as much as you can. Dim the lights, avoid sudden motion or scares of any sort. Basically remove any stressors you can think of and they will do the rest.

a really good shipper would have bagged each individual fish separately . . . and now you know why . . .

Thanks for the replys, i was in a state of panic, none survived, but all other are doing great. I got them from Rapps and this is the first time i have ever had fish die from him, and i would have guessed the beani if i had to. I think it was because they were in a smaller bag, that probably did it.
