arrow growth rate...

i picked up a 1.5-2.00in arrow (no egg sac) from my local guy. he gets fed twice a day hikari gold cichlid pellets (small), hikari frozen krill, bloodworms and calamari, occasionally.

how long will it be until he starts gaining an inch or two a month? i've had him for 1.5 weeks.
 
if you keep feeding it well it will start growing that fast very soon.

Australian Arowana grow to about the same size. The growth rate is fastest for the first year. Being one of the slowest growers in the Arowana family,will generally reach about 12 inches in the first year.The growth rate in the Silver Arowana is about two inches (5cm) a month during their first year. But this is from a book and mine grew a lot quicker but i did the cardinal sin of feeding every day i do not reccomend this as they do need to fast.
 
its a silver and usually eats twice a day. sometimes i will let him go a day with no food.
 
Are arowanas that small really fragile? I was looking to buy a silver arowana yesterday and I found one at my LFS that was about the same size, 1.5-2". I didnt really wanna buy it because it didn't seem robust enough. It had so little body mass and the fins behind the gills (I think they're called pectoral?) were so large in comparison with the rest of the body. It also seemed to be struggling to swim right with the current. I was afraid it would either die on its own or just be eaten by my pim pictus. What size do you guys usually buy your silvers? I'm kinda aiming for the 4-6" range but I wanna know what you guys prefer.
 
I say it's better to buy a silver around 6-8" from tip of barbell to the end of the tail.
That way they are alot stronger and you can really see if anything is unproportionate, also you will be able to start seeing their real coloration. IMO!
 
i agree it was a risk to buy one so small, but i eventually want to get into keeping extremely detailed reef tanks and figured if i couldn't take care of this small arro there was no way i could manage a large reef tank. plus i just like raising these small guys and seeing them grow into monsters.

I for one like to get them when they are small 2"-3". I dunno - I just like watching my little aro grow into a big boy. <sniff> Same feeling you get when you send your kid to school for the first time. haha.


As for a reef tank - I'm actually the opposite. I've kept a reef tank for the last 4-5 years, and Im beginning to get a change of heart. I'm reverting back to the original reason why I got addicted to this hobby. Back to good ol' fish keeping. haha. - and what better way then go to with Monster Fish. :D
 
for the first year i would grow about 1-2 inches per month, you should maximize its growth rate on the first year, after that your aro will grow slower
