Throwing out a theoretical question here:

Would a mature (21") ARTC (Asian Red Tailed Catfish) and Jardini Aro of good size that needs rehoming work in a tank together?

The theory being an aggresive ARTC is intolerant of other bottom dwelling fish so other catfish with it would be a no-no. A good size Jardini would also be a complete aggresive axe murderer but spends it's time at the surface, so other mid-level to surface fish are a no-no.

These 2 fish normally have to be kept in solitary spieces tanks but could they 'happily' co-exists or would they just meet halfway up and batter each other until only one survives?

Discuss.

most likely no, but you can always try. But the risk to to great to try it.

Thought so. Just don't want to make an expensive mistake. With the space i have available if i wanted to try this out, a silver aro would get too big, an asian or a black aro could be an expensive mistake, and can't think what else hangs around the surface and grows to 2' ish other than a jardini.

I wouldn't want to waste a large tank on 1 artc with no personality just because it's free.

I think the jar aggression would be the bigger issue, so if you could somehow come by a tolerant jar you might be ok. Some will ignore bottom dwellers but I've heard of them killing various cats including plecos so if you do have the "axe murderer" type it probably wouldn't work.

hmmm, that could be a possibility, i did have a quick look on aquarist-clasifieds and there's a couple for sale that claim to be tank mate tolerant.....only got the owners word for it though.

I might see at attempting to negotiate an attempt at tank mates with the artc like barbs or something. If they work then problem solved.

jar cant really hurt the cat....meanwhile the cat and swallow it or die trying

Personally I don't think an ARTC would live happly with anything roughly the same size there one of the most agresive fish in the world. (from what i have read on the species) mabey of you had a MASSIVE tank say 1000 gallons and the fish were much larger than the cat. but you never know... just my view of the matter.

Unfortunately my 1000gal will have other catfish in so that won't work.

The info i have just states against other bottom dwelling fish but i agree they do have a reputation for being overly aggresive with tank mates. I think i'm going to have to try and get the lfs currently holding the cat to do some experiments, I don't want to end end up with a huge tank for just one bottom dwelling nocturnal fish. I do have some poor quality pictures of this beast somewhere, is a right looker, but due to lack of space they've got it hidden out back in a stock tub now and they want rid. If i can turn on the charm and get them to drop a silver aro in there briefly and watch it's reaction then that'll probably answer it for me.

I have seen one lfs display tank with a 2' mystus wykii in a community, and they only get away with it cause the 2' giraffe sharing the space has bullied it and the other tank mates into submition! So anything is possible, just wish space and money were no object to try them out!
