Is it strictly substrate and diet that ultimately determine what color your Jar will be? I definitely like the lighter shade better, but also enjoy the pink highlights.

Would the best way to achieve this be light sand substrate, and good lighting?

What about background? Would a black background make the fish darker, and if so is a clear back OK or does that make the fish feel insecure?

I like the Leis as well, but am not sure if their additional length is something I will want to accomodate.

How much bigger is an average full grown Lei than an average full grown Jar?

there are a lot of factors. first, i would say would be food. if they have no color, then it won't matter too much. darker substrates tend to make the fish look a little darker and dark backgrounds create contrast to make them stand out more (unless it's a really dark fish). the type of light also plays a big part. there are a lot of other factors, too, like what mood they're in (for example, if they are stressed out or showing dominance, etc.)
