I just recently purchased a new house, and pretty much the entire basement has old Asbestos Floor tiling.. Now I was told it is not dangerous as long as you don't pull it up..

My Question is: What if water were to spill on it, and what about moisture? Could it possibly become a problem or health risk?

Also, I think that it is already sealed and holds water, but if I wanted to put another layer of sealant on their, what would be the most effective and cost effecient?

I want to put my fish room in an area that has this tiling, and I want to make sure it's safe before I do anything.. Thanks in advance!

Checked with my dad''As long as the tiles are not broken you'll be fine''-Anne

I had the same situation in my last house. I coated the entire basement floor with an epoxy coating sold for garage and shop floors. It made the whole shibang waterproof and danger-free.

I was thinking Epoxy too.. But I hear it can be pretty expensive. Any alternatives?

We will eventually be putting carpeting over the whole basement anyways, so I'm not too worried about the look of it.

My kitchen floor has that crap on it....I was told NOT to rip it up....You can just cover it with more tile.....I am using the "peel & stick" kind, but I am also using an epoxy to lay it down with.....

Miles: That was my house in the Tri-cities (Pasco). I got the coating from Home Depot. I went with desert sand for a color (Like 3 tours in the Gulf wasn't enough sand for me). I even mixed in a small amount of sliver/gold fine metal flake to provide the occassional sparkle to mimic sand on a beach. Looked pretty good. Did a 48x36 area for under $200.

Ewww.. you had to live in the Dirty South? (inside joke up here in Spokane)..

I bet you had your fair share of fun at Aquatropics? or you probably didn't bother.

I will call around and get some price quotes!

Thanks for the input everyone!

Do not tear it up. Put the new flooring over the top, then you will be fine. I work in flooring.
