I know you are a wolf man, and I was wondering in your experience what is the best, affordable wolf (ie not a 2 grand aimara :D)

When I was a kid I saw a 2 foot aimara in a tank, with nails as teeth and I was enchanted, it was huge and aggressive. A true monster.

THen when I got back into the hobby I decided to get a wolf as my first fish, the only thing I could find then in the UK was a brazilian malabaricus.

I was really disappointed, I had the fish for about 6 months and it was one of the most boring preds I've had, never moved, never reacted to food, would just sit there all day. It waited till I went to bed to eat feeders etc. I barely saw it ate, it was not aggressive or active. It was as dull as an electric cat I had as a child.

But after seeing how aggressive some of the other hops are, I have not given up hope on wolves, I would not mind trying another.

so what would you recommend? Out of the wolves you've kept, which ones are more active and which ones hammer feeders as soon as you put them in? :)

Cheers,
RS

I am no expert, but yes I do have a few wolves to speak of. My choice would be a lacerdae. There are a few that are much more active during the day. Black wolves and some aimara's especially the ones witrh big eyes are more active at night. One of my aimara's will only eat when the room is pitch black. Those $2,000-$3,000 aimara's that are going around seem to be much more active during the day, but I don't have one yet so I could not say for sure. I am waiting for one which is not damaged, all the ones that have been imported so far have had some sort of damage done to them. Although the one that you speak of seems to be in perfect condition.

hey rumble , why dont you get a small aimara for a start? Im sure it wont run you a
grand for a small one.

those would be good fish if you want to dedicate a tank to them or keep them with really big fish. But from my experience the Hoplias genus is not as active as Erythrinus, not that I am an expert or have owned all varieties. And Erythrinus erythrinus only get about 8” and can live with larger cichlids

they had a 2' Hoplias lacerdae in BAS last year i seen it when i bought my ATF and it was a beast very active and very aggressive.
i think they had it up for sale for around £300

a brazilian black wolf?

thanks for the reply ash, as soon as I move country I'm going to try and locate a juvenile lacerdae - by the way have you ever kept a macrophthalmus? Apparently they are quite active midwater swimmers.

Wes - I would not say no to a juvenile aimara, it was an aimara that got me interested in wolves. However, if lacerdaes are generally more active I'm going to try and hunt down one of those :)

Big - I like ery erys, they are cool fish, but they only get to 8 inches :D WHat got me interested in wolves in the first place was a massive beast I saw as a kid, so I'm looking for something that grows into a huge demon of a fish ;)

Any chance you might want to go for a Hoplias malabaricus again? :D

Mine doesn't move much either. But it does come and hover around for food when I'm near the tank. That is good enough for me. I don't care much when I'm not around because I can't see them either.

But the aimara... They are killers. I saw them at my LFS, put my hand in front of the tank, and all of them tried to attack my hand. Of course, they are all in different tanks.
