I'm a proud new owner of a used 180g with dual overflows here's what I want to do with it.

4 Dats Microlep (4-5inch)
12 Clown Loaches (3-4)
6 Bala Sharks (4-5)

I have in mind a 240g for the future. Then hopefully I'll have a house for a ~500g

Overstocked Under stocked? I know dats are slow growing and need a group to keep aggression amongst themselves down but some places say 4-5 in a 180 is fine... others day 3 need a 240g.. Looking for some advice.
I know clowns and bala sharks are also slow growing.

Drop 2 dats for some tinfoil barbs? Pretty much open to anything from southeast Asia.

Just keep one dat? I'd like at least one.

Sounds kind of like what I am planning as I intend to house my three balas, three black eared sharks and possibly some clown loaches in with a few of my dats..
You just never know how dats will get along with each other until you try them out but that tank should be enough space for them to grow used to each other. Many people have said that certain numbers of dats will and will not work but I have had very few squabbles with small numbers of them kept together.

In doing research I've found out that Dats will eventually require brackish water which changes my plan entirely. Now I'm wrestling with the idea of a brackish tank or something else. Although 5 monos, 3 scats, 1 dat, 1 archerfish and 2 colombian sharks seems pretty cool.

May I ask where did you find information about dats needing brackish water?

IT Dats (Datnoides Microlepis) do not need brackish or salt ever in their lives.
Right, and although the silver dat is said to be brackish I have heard of very few people ever keeping them in such conditions.

Datnioides Microlepis it is then. I'll do a tank journal once I finally decide what I want to do with it. For now my head just hurts from thinking about all the options haha.

Keep us posted.
