BY TEOH TEIK HOONG
PETALING JAYA: A Middle Eastern mans attempt to smuggle 35 internationally-protected Arowana into the country from Singapore was foiled, and his prized fish seized, last week.
Fisheries Department officers intercepted the man in his 40s at the Second Link Johor-Singapore Bridge and confiscated the mature Arowanas, which had no permits under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
The haul, comprising Golden, Super Red and Red Arowana, was worth RM175,000.
Fisheries Department Quarantine and Fish Health Unit head Fauzidah Othman told The Star that acting on information the officers checked on a consignment of Arowana being transported from Singapore to a farm in Gelang Patah.
The officers found 332 Arowanas with CITES permits and 35 Arowanas without such permits.
The arowana is an endangered species and protected worldwide under CITES.
Arowanas are all required to be micro-chipped under CITES, said Fauzidah, adding that the smuggler would be charged under the Fisheries Act.
