The scales are rotting away. You can use any medication that have antibiotic in them. Or if you can get hold of the japanese yelllow powder it will good.

Taking the fish out and removing the scales sounds more than I'd like to risk.
Even at half dose are rays that sensitive?

The thing is that scalesless fish tend to be greatly affected by malachite green... I won't risk using it on rays though.

"It's more than you like to risk" but to ensure that the wound is taken care of you have to take measures into your own hands. Bag him up, put a few drops of clove oil, take him up and wrap him up in a damp cloth soaked in aquarium water. Make sure to cover his face bc that seems to calm them down. Take some tweezers and pull away the affected area and scrape off any dead material. Then sprinkle the meds over the wound and rub it in to make sure it's all covered. Then put him back in the tank or hospital tank. Keep your water clean, temps up and reduce feedings. Add salt if you like and do a 25% water change in 3 days. Keep changing water every 3 days and add salt until you see improvement.

Sorry to see this ash?
Hope it heals..

Why is the tail look so short?
Looks like it been badly damaged with previous owner... amd not healed properly.. I seen this with arro comms that end up fighting bad.

That's sad, hope you get it figured out, was the tail torn up at the time you got it as well? You sure its not just damaged from something? I.always start salting the water the moment I notice something. Pimafix might be a good one to use along with salt.
