Hello there my name is Mark and have been a lurking member here for a little while and this is my first post. The reason for my post today is I am doing a research paper on the Asian Arowana and its endangerment and conservation and would like the help from all who are willing to participate. I would like to post a few questions I only have four at the moment and use the responses as direct quotes in my paper and would like to cite the author of the answer whether it be screen name first name or whatever. If you have any other questions that I have not thought of yet and feel are relevant by all means please say so this is a research paper and am looking for all input. If you would like to answer but not have it quoted that can be respected as well just please note in your post as such. So do we have any participants?

i'm no asian aro expert but i'd say talk to Koji..

I'm not really n expert also. But I personally think they should be aloud here in the states as long as they are captive/farmed raised & even chip for verification. There is a market here for them & enough seasoned hobbyist with the right setups that can house these beautiful fish. Of for a commercial venture in breeding them here in the states would be nice. I think they have a release program in asia. So if a wild one is removed for breeding purposes they can release two captive raised ones to help keep the gene pool strong?
Just my 2 cents.

Well good to here some responses, but just as a note I am not looking for experts per say I am just looking for everyones opinion. Any ways I will post the few questions that I have picked for my research and as stated before if you have another question that you feel is or should be relevant by all means.

What do you feel was the leading cause of endangerment of the Asian Arowana - aquarium trade or habitat destruction or both equal?

Do you think being on the endangered list is enough to conserve this species or should more be done?
If you feel more should be done please give an example of something that can be done.

Do you think that not allowing captive bred specimens in the US helps conservation?
If yes - in what way?
If no- do you think allowing them in the US will help conservation and how?

These are a couple of the questions that I have chosen for the research and any body willing to state their opinion would be greatly appreciated and as said before I would like to use this "interview" in my paper with proper citation so once again thanks for all and any help that can be provided and Just as a note I chose this board because of the great minds full of information that are on this board so thank you all.
Mark

Don't quote me on these, in my opinion:

What do you feel was the leading cause of endangerment of the Asian Arowana - aquarium trade or habitat destruction or both equal?

The leading cause is habitat destruction.

Do you think being on the endangered list is enough to conserve this species or should more be done?

Not enough.

If you feel more should be done please give an example of something that can be done.

The effort should be put in maintain the habitat

Do you think that not allowing captive bred specimens in the US helps conservation?

No

If yes - in what way?
If no- do you think allowing them in the US will help conservation and how?

And no!

Thank you everybody for your replies so far and Kenta thanks for the references I will be reading through those now. Anybody else have an opinion that they would like to share on this?
