Hey guys-

Arowana newbie here. I have a question about Asian Arowanas in the USA.

I was recently offered the opportunity to purchase two super red Asian Arowanas (both are 10") here in Southern California from private owner for about $3000 a piece.

I am told that both fish have "papers", and that they were originally purchased from another private individual.

My questions is twofold:

(1) What is the rough market price for a super red asian arowana of this size in the North American market? Do you think 3 grand is a good price?

(2) Would I be violating some law / opening myself up to criminal liability if I purchased these fish which are already in the United States?

Cheers,
-Leandro

yeah u are also get fined and fish will be confiscated or destroyed if caught but a good price for 3000. My friend got his super red AA quaklity for 4500 and its was 6 inches

I think its like a possible $10,000.00 and jail time if you get caught buying selling or in possesion

Welcome to MFK!!!

Sounded like a good deal before you asked about it on a public forum. F&W does monitor these boards and people have been busted (vendors) for trade in these illegal species.

Check out the FAQ forum for restricted species lists by states.

BTW, doesn't matter whether asian aros have papers or chip registrations. The species is flat-out illegal in the US unless you have proof of a specimen that's over 30 years old (pre-CITES).

Hey guys-

Thanks for the update on the legality of it all. I wasn't sure if it was illegal to buy/own the fish, or just illegal to import them.

As cool as they are, I'm not really willing to go to jail for the sake of my aquarium! ;)

Interesting to know the 3 grand was a good deal though ... sounded pricey to me.

Thanks so much,
-Grady
