How big I tank would I need to keep an asian arro with a half dozen or so smaller tank mates?

As for the tank mates themselves, I haven't decided. I would ideally prefer fish that are just big enough to avoid getting eaten, peaceful enough to not shred my arro's fins, and something that will not tear up all my plants. I'd like the arro to be the centerpiece of the tank, but I would also not like him to be the only fish in the tank.

Any thoughts?

180 gallons for a while and eventually you'll need to upgrade maybe to a 300 gallons. Maybe another asian aro as tankmate?

A classic set up is a FF (Fei Feng aka Flagtail Prochilodus) a Datnoid sp.
(NTT, Indodat, etc.) and an Asian aro.

Rays and birchirs go well too, since they are bottom fish.

In my experience it is always nice to introduce the fish together when young and try to grow them out together.

:iagree:

yea 180 gallon + and introduce when small

The footprint is important 6' L x 2.5' W would be the minimum without having to upgrade down the road. Rays, clown loaches, severums, discus, alway show nice without taking away from the show piece.

I wouldn't put two aro's together as they may fight. I would have just one or have many (if I could afford it) as a community tank to spread out the aggression. I like your idea of just one as a centerpiece with a few other smaller fish in the 180. Rays would get too big for this tank as well.

you could put 2 arowana if you had a big tank but if i were u i wouldnt try it

If you decide to add rays in, make sure you get something bigger than 180, almost all rays wont work in a tank that small. Your filtration has to be overkill, rays crap like theres no tomorrow. And make sure you can afford the food, i tell you now i spend almost $20 a month feeding one 20" disc ray, and i have quite a few rays to feed not to mention the aros...
