Hi all, the other day, i noticed that there was an asian beetle stuck into my filter intake, and now one of my angelfish has a cloudy eye and my knifefish looked like he was about to croak earlier. I have since removed the asian beetle from the filter, but could it have released some toxin into my water?

thanks

did u crush the beetle?
more like, my filter crushed it in its intake..... I have an fx5

its possible that the beetle could have come in contact with pesticides or other toxins from outside.

well, it is getting cooler out, so they are coming in the house.

water changes then?

A dead beetle can contribute to ammonia. What are your water parameters?

You were right Lupin, thanks. There was a slight ammonia spike, but not too much, did not exceed 1ppm, yet it has seem to have taken its toll. I dont see the beetles go in until they are floating on the water or sucked into my filter. The tank is not entirely closed top, maybe it should be though, but I suppose they are attracted to it because it is a good source of heat.

Im gonna do a water change and add my last bag of Fluval Clearmax to my filter. That should do it.

Asian ladybird beetles are poisonous. That is why they are so brightly-colored--to warn potential predators. Bees and wasps have similar bright colors contrasting with black to warn predators of their stings.

well, there has been one casualty, but so far, the tank seems to be back to normal
