anyone know the scientific name for this species? I recently saw some for sale at a LFS for 19.99 each. They have a big head with long whiskers, with a huge mouth, brown body with black splotches here and there, and the rear of the body goes into a kind of knife fish shape. I jus wanted to know more info on this species.

Does it taper all the way to the tail or does it have a forked tail? How big is it? If it has a forked tail it might be an adult Ompok bimaculatus.

tapered all the way.

they range from about 4-6 inches. look to be babies still. i'd say the head/mouth is really huge, looks like at just 5 inches they can open up to about 2 inches in diameter.

Wallago atu or something closely related is my guess, one of the wood cats, check the wallago atu in today's postings in the buy+sell forum, there are pictures.

wow, those things get huge, guess I won't be going back to pick one up. it's MONSTER but a little too much monster.

There is a related one called the striped wood cat (Trachelyopterichthys taeniatus) that if you can find one looks very simalar but with nice dark and light horizontal stripes running from gills to tail. They are only supposed to get to 8" long (according to the same book that told me black aros top out at 18" so take it with a grain of salt). It is a very nice looking oddball catfish.
