Well maybe not as much a grow out thread than a growth thread since I'm not dealing with a monster, but it makes it sound cooler. About 6 weeks ago I went to my LFS to get carbon and as always had to browse all the freshwater fish there. I look in a tank and see a bunch if asian bb cats hiding together in a plant but then notice one out and about during lights on. So I impulse bought him :). Luckily I had room for him and he wouldn't outgrow both my tanks. Right now he is in my 30 tall which I plan on making 'his' tank with him as the centerpiece fish. But I can always upgrade him to my 75 if he gets cramped.

Anyways, he isn't like all your bumblebee cats people. How is he different you may ask, well a lot of ways that I'll list here:

* he is diurnal
* he doesn't mind other bottom feeders but doesn't care for top level fish for some reason
* he surface feeds
* he handfeeds
* he begs for food like cichlids do
* he is chocked full of personality

all this at 2.5" after having him for only 6 weeks!

the one and ONLY downside to him is that he will eat exclusively frozen foods, won't even smell freeze dried or pellet.
But I'd say it's worth it for all those traits I listed above, I got the better end of the deal for sure this time.

So like I said he is 2.5" now in my 30 tall and I'll keep you guys updated on him.

some pictures after tonight's meal of an entire bloodworm cube in two bites.

Nice how big do they get?

6" is max but 4 or 5 inches is more likely. He may wind up getting the 30 to himself eventually as an adult needs about 20 gallons of a 30 gallon tank to itself. They are awesome fish but ask anybody else who has them and most likely all will say they never see the fish.

He'll ya man.my rtc is the same only eats frozen food lol sucks cause my jacks and oscar always wanna eat it before the cat gets it,thinking about moving it to the 30 gallon by itself till 220 is up

Might do a feeding video tonight (since he only eats bloodworms I alternate between flake & 1 bloodworm cube and 2 bloodworm cubes every night ).

Nice report. Looks like we are talking Pseudomystus siamensis http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=708

These (and RTCs) are most unfussy, indiscriminating, enthusiastic feeders IME and that of others. One does not need to jump through hoops to get them to eat. When they are stress free and healthy, they will eventually eat anything and everything offered to them and to their tank mates.

This guy is a carnivore and insectivore though, so this should be the staple of the diet.

Yes, pseudomystus siamensis. What insects that sink could I feed him?

I have 2 weird syno cats, they both take alot of daytime strolls, or just sit around or swim around the tank during the day, they surface feed, and sometimes handfeed to :D Sometimes you just get lucky :D
