Just picked one of these up and have it in a slightly brackish water tank. However, I also read that they could be kept in freshwater. So I was wondering if anyone had any input on this, can they successfully be kept in a full freshwater tank or slightly brackish water necessary.

i have never heard of them in anything but fresh water, however this should be moved to the other characins section.
Not really a fish for this forum as we talk about Lepisosteids here but I have worked with them. Slightly brackish is fine for them. Fresh is fine for them.. Just keep them in something stable and your good. Please do note these are not gar and are very different from them.
i think they are brackish, i always see them in the estuaries here in the philippines when i go fishing.
