I was at my lfs the other day and saw some asian red tail cats that were about 3 inches for 8 or 9 bucks. I think they're pretty cool, but would they be worth the price or should i just get the rtc/tsn they had for 20? i know the asians are mean, but i have no problem housing one alone. anybody have experience with these fish?

As long as you're willing to house it alone, it could be a great pick up. I wouldn't plan on seeing him too much, especially in the beginning, because they tend to be very reclusive. I have a H. wyckii (Crystal Eyed Catfish) and I hardly ever see him...only during feeding time.

These guys aren't as demanding as RTC due to the fact that they don't attain the MONSTER proportions of the latter, but it's still going to be a heck of a requirement considering they will top out at about 3 feet.

i agree. i've had a few. All except for one have been extremely brutal to other tank mates always ended up in a seperate tank. they are one of my favorite fish.

anti-social fish hard to keep fun to watch

I like the RTCxTSN mine is very active and eats from my hand at the serface of the water never hiding in his cave I made for him

i have one wyckiodes
i don't see him at all
and if i want to see him i put food in his tank switch off all the lights and then all i get to see is the silhouette ofthe black catfish zipping around in the tank from one hiding place to the other
and apparently he is too fast even for the danios i tried to keep in his tank
finished 4 out of 6 danios i tried to add to the tank

I dont really like shy fish too much, i will just get the hybrid cat. i wont be disapointed

Probably a better choice if you want something with more character. I have a RTCxTSN and he is out ALL THE TIME...just prowling the tank looking for food. He feeds with such tenacity that he's gone as far as pulling shrimp out of my gulper cats mouths...:D

tsn x rtc for 20geez
i just paid 49.99
