I found one for sale locally. Beautiful specific. Only 4" now. Does anyone have any experience with them? I know they can be pretty aggressive but hear of more success when purchased young. I would plan on keeping it in a 125g for now but realize it will need more than 2x that in the future. Any feedback?

The only reason you have success when they're young is because they are young. It WILL get big and it WILL shred its tankmates. Young ones are relatively peaceful because they're small enough to get eaten. Be very careful putting him in a tank with fish you care about, because after a while heyll end up missing or dead. There are no accounts of ARTC growing to maturity (18"+) and not having aggression issues.

Unless of course you have a tank like arapaimag.

I have a artc, have had him at least 2 years, hes over 12" now, he grew up with a Oscar and a black shark, there both at least 12" now got a 2nd black shark a year ago he's almost 12", has lived with feather fins and other fish, has never ate a gold fish, loves shrimp pellets

Sorry to derail but when you say over 12" and at least 2 years, do you mean he's still around the 12" mark? What size tank is he in? He should be bigger, I got one at 2" and he was well over 12" at least 6-7 months later..

Back on topic... Asian red tails are just the devil in a tank. Nothing will be safe with them. Just give if time and youll see how mean they are.

I would say mine was aggressive in comparison like a dovii, but it ate everything! My reason for rehoming mine at 12" was just base on that. Other than that he was fine with my bigger 8-12" south and central american cichlids.
