Hello everyone, I recently purchased an adult pair of asian tiger lobster (4.5 inches), nice color pattern and really beautiful. I plan to breed them if possible but seems like there is so little information about them online.

I am now thinking about putting them in a big tank with live plants. I have a 55 gallon planted tank with a lot of driftwood and rocks. It's an well established tank with a few small community fish and several bristlenose pleco. My biggest concern is I have 2 adult bamboo shrimps (3.5 inches) in the 55 gallon tank and I like them too. I don't have other place to put the bamboo shrimps but not sure if the tiger lobsters will hurt them or not. So please give me some suggestions:

1) Can I keep the asian tiger lobster pair together with the bamboo shrimp in the same 55 gallon planted tank? Will the tigers hurt/kill the bamboo shrimps, especially when the bamboo shrimps molt? There are a lot hiding place in the tank though.

2) Do tiger lobster like planted tank with a bit acid water (ph about 6)? Will they eat the plants?

3) I heard people saying that tigers are not as aggressive as american crayfish like blues, so will the tigers hunt small community fish, like guppy or tetras?

4) Has anybody try to breed asian tiger lobsters? Any tips or suggestions?

Any input would be appreciated! thanks!

Never personally kept them, but this is my take on your situation...

1) I'm going to say yes, there is a chance they will kill your bamboo shrimp since bamboo shrimp are very very peaceful creatures in comparison

2) I'm going to guess there is a chance they may clip some of your plants

3) If they are too slow or slightly sick, i'm again going to say yes, there is a chance they will eat your fish if they can catch them

I believe Asian tiger lobsters are Cherax misolicus. Not sure if there are strong similarities between species of the Cherax family but speaking from experience, my Cherax boesemani are pretty aggressive to their own. My male killed the female within a few weeks. Not sure if this translates to aggressiveness towards other species of crustacean, but to err on the side of caution, I would agree with Homer and not mix bamboos in with them. Bamboos being very docile in their own right. Optimally, the bamboos would probably be great in a 20-gallon tank with some driftwood or plants sitting below a strong spraybar so they can fan out and filter feed.

Thanks a lot! I have been keeping the pair of tigers in the same 20 gallon tank for more than a month and I didn't see any fight. From what I read and heard, these tigers or zebras are not aggressive at all. But again, I agree with you and Homer that it might be too risky to put tighers with my bamboos.

Thanks again!

Yeah, probably a good move considering if they decided to go up against your bamboos, then those fans aren't going to help much against those claws...
