I know there are certain fruits and vegetables out there that are perfectly healthy for humans but not for reptiles - are there any that apply to fish? I been rolling through my head how to vary the veggie diet for my cichlids and catfish/plecos, and asparagus was one I had in question. I was thinking of taking a stalk or 2 and sinking them to the bottom w/ a rock and see what happens.

Anyone ever have BAD results from certain vegetation?

Asparagus is fine, i slit the cooked stalks lengthways. My clown loach go bananas munching on the soft pulpy centre. But my fishes favourite by far, and i've tried everything, is cooked brocolli. They go berserk. I can't say i've come across any veggies yet that they won't entertain, maybe other people have.

Most terrestrial based plant matter has limited application in aquaculture, unless cooked first to destroy the anti-nutritional matter that is present. (such as saponins) That doesn't mean that fish don't like terrestrial sourced raw veggies, or won't devour them, it just means that too much isn't healthy for them. Better to stick to aquatic based plant matter, which is more natural to finfish, and generally doesn't contain the anti-nutritional matter that is found in terrestrial based plant matter.
