Well i recently stopped by a local fish store and saw a great deal on some assorted Malawi African cichlids. I know for sure that there are some yellow labs, red zebras but not too sure about the rest. My question is this, Do they generally sell less aggressive cichlids in assorted tanks or will/can they become aggressive as they age?

assorted tanks are generally mbuna, which are really aggressive. Also, many assorted cichlids are hybrids, so chances are you won't be getting purebreds

I suggest not selecting fish at random (from assorted or species tanks) without knowing the characteristics of that species. If you can positively identify less aggressive species, go for it. Hybrids are an unknown, so assume the worst with them (though you could also assume the worse with known species such as kenyi and auratus which are common in assorted tanks, however their aggression is to be expected).

Most juvenile cichilds start out very manageable and probably even non-aggressive. This changes once sexual maturity develops (aggression levels varies upon species and individual tank set up).

Most cichlids are going to be aggressive to some degree or another. That's a given.

Alot of whats in the mixed tanks are real aggresive and hybrids so unpredictable too.If you want to go that way get a bunch and theyll kill each other till you end up with a group that will coexist.
imo better to buy groups or all male group from local breeders.

This is true. The most popular "Assorted African" species selections are also the most aggressive. Metriaclima lombardoi, Melanochromis auratus, Mel. johannii, Mel. chipokae, Psedotropheus crabro.
Post pictures if you need help IDing your fish.
