Does or has it happened? Just curious if it can happen I'm the home aquarium or if its a seasonal or hormonal change or maybe just when they reach a certain size. pics below of what I'm talking about

Probably diet, breeding behaviour, and water conditions, but could be seasonal as well, so if the first three yes, but with seasonal may very well be near impossible to duplicate.

C. temensis, in its bright spawning color phase (above right) is called “assu” in Brazil or “3-bar” in English. They become heavier and deeper bodied in this form due to pre-spawn changes and matured gonads.

In the "paca" form (opposite right), C. temensis displays a darker color pattern and a more hydrodynamic shape.

http://www.acuteangling.com/taxonomy/Cichla temensis.html is where I found that.

These are the colors of a full grown Temensis I would say after 36'' or anywhere in that range from what I have seen and read. Have yet to actually experience this myself.

I think I have seen smaller fish take on the coloration. I'm trying to locate the pictures. It makes sense if its pre-spawning conditioning as there are plenty of other species of fish that go through dramatic coloration changes. I wonder why other species of Cichla don't have a spawning coloration though.

haha Maybe? I guess I need a C.R.E.A.M. in my sig huh? :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

Can you post pic of Assu in an aquarium?
