Well, after a long hard week of decisions, I have elected to go with the Canon 350D.

I was able to purchase the kit with a 256 mb card for under $900 and also finance it all in one, thanks to the special deals I get as a servicemember through AAFES (post exchange)

I expect to learn tonight, after a tireless night of shooting (batteries charged :) )

Expect real pictures of my tanks soon, after they are showable again, hehe

Welcome to the learning curve (from one who is climbing it slowly ;) )

Hey Tony!

Quite a switch from a Nikon D100 to a Canon EOS 350D! Jumping ship or switching camps as some would call it. Care to share what finally influenced your decision?

However, I'm sure you will be happy with your decision and we look forward to your pictures!

Cheers,

Yeah, how did the tanks make it through the move?
Congrats

Well, they are experiencing algae, as you will see when I'm brave enough to try pictures, lol

The D100 is my volunteer work camera that I get to use periodically at home, though I wanted one :)

I decided to get a Canon vice a Nikon because I studied the two closely at dpreview amongst other sites; and the extra two megapixels, cheaper price, and availability of cheap lenses as compared to the D70 swayed me heavily. I was never a Nikon owner, and didn't feel compelled to keep brand loyalty. At the exchange and other places Canon EF lenses are more available and easier to buy. As a matter of fact, for a starter 80-210 lens I found a Tamron 3.5-4.5 for only $85 with my discount. I figure this will help me get used to the lens type while making decent pictures here and there, but not cost so much that I shouldn't buy another lens to replace it when I'm ready. I like the 350's feel, it's much better than the 300, and the image chip is very nice!

Tony, I will be totally honest here, I looked at the 350 and did not like the feel at all. It's TINY, and while you may be thinking smaller is better, I have learned that it's the opposite with DSLRs, I just bought a Grip for my 20D to make it bigger and more balanced, because as soon as you start using better and heavier lenses (like the 100mm macro, it's a heavy lens for that size) you start having problems with smaller bodies. I love it now with the grip, the camera looks like Mark II and feels similar while holding in my hand. Best $180 I spent recently :)

I dont mean to be a downer, seriously, but it's better to hear it now than find out yourself later.

I don't really think smaller is better; what I meant was that it felt much better than the 300 because it is either made better in general or the materials have more quality to them. I can't afford anything like a 20D or we wouldn't be having this conversation, lol :) The grip is essential in my mind anyhoo, the D100 I use from work has one and I love it, although it makes that camera almost too big. They have a grip out for the 350, and when I have funds to, I will buy it out of necessity. It's no biggie, but I do feel good about my purchase, as I've weighed the options for about a month now, and studied accessory prices as well.
